The torrential rains left several roads submerged, disrupted transportation, and affected numerous residential communities in parts of Greater Accra. In response, the minister called for urgent action to protect lives and assist residents impacted by the flooding.
According to the directive, MMDCEs are expected to move into their communities immediately alongside emergency response teams, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other technical personnel to support rescue operations. Their responsibilities include helping stranded residents, evacuating those trapped by floodwaters, assessing damage, and providing emergency relief where necessary.
Mrs. Ocloo emphasized that local authorities must remain actively involved until the situation is fully under control. She stressed that the current emergency requires strong leadership, quick decision-making, and coordinated action from all stakeholders.
The minister also expressed sympathy to families and individuals who suffered losses due to the floods. She assured affected residents that the government remains committed to supporting them during this difficult period and ensuring their safety and well-being.
To strengthen the response, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is working closely with NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, and other emergency agencies. Together, these institutions are coordinating rescue activities and taking measures to protect both lives and property.
With weather authorities forecasting additional rainfall in the coming days, residents have been urged to remain cautious. The minister advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains, stay away from flood-prone areas, drains, and fast-moving floodwaters, and remain indoors whenever possible.
Parents and guardians were also encouraged to closely monitor children and ensure they do not play in floodwaters or attempt to cross flooded roads and drainage channels, as such actions could be extremely dangerous.
The minister further appealed to residents to cooperate with emergency personnel and follow all safety instructions issued by authorities. She reassured the public that emergency teams will continue working around the clock to provide assistance and support to affected communities until conditions improve.
