Real Madrid and Inter Milan stars face off as the Champions League giants prepare for a thrilling clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The wait is finally over as the UEFA Champions League returns today, with two European giants, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, set to face each other in a mouth-watering opening-night clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The match, scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, will see Real Madrid begin their Champions League campaign at home against a dangerous Inter Milan side.
For Real Madrid, playing in front of their home supporters brings an opportunity to make a strong statement from the beginning of the competition. The Spanish giants will be determined to give their fans something to celebrate and show Europe that they are ready to challenge for another Champions League crown.
However, Inter Milan will not travel to Madrid simply to admire the atmosphere. The Italian side will be looking to produce a major result at the Bernabéu and send a warning to the rest of Europe.
Can Real Madrid Protect Their Home?
Real Madrid will enter the game under significant pressure, especially after suffering a 1–0 defeat to Real Betis in LaLiga in their previous match.
With stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr. and Jude Bellingham, Madrid have enough attacking quality to cause serious problems for Inter's defence.
The home crowd could also play an important role as Madrid look to turn the Santiago Bernabéu into a fortress once again.
Inter Milan Have Nothing to Fear
Inter Milan arrive in Madrid with confidence after making a strong start to their Serie A campaign. The Nerazzurri have won their opening three league matches, including a comeback victory against Napoli.
Players such as Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram could be crucial if Inter are to hurt Madrid on the counter-attack and silence the Bernabéu.
Inter will know that defeating Real Madrid away from home would be a huge statement and could give the Italian side tremendous confidence for the rest of the Champions League campaign.
A Night of History?
This match carries another interesting storyline because José Mourinho will face his former club Inter Milan as Real Madrid's manager. Mourinho famously guided Inter to Champions League glory in 2010, with the final taking place at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Now, 16 years later, Mourinho returns to the Champions League stage at the same stadium with the responsibility of leading Real Madrid against the club he once guided to European glory.
The question is simple: Will Real Madrid use home advantage to begin their Champions League campaign with a victory, or will Inter Milan shock the football world by defeating the Spanish giants in their own stadium?
One thing is certain — football fans around the world are in for a fascinating night in Madrid.
