Four Dead in Toyota Voxy and MAN Trailer Crash on Accra–Kumasi Highway

Four Dead in Toyota Voxy and MAN Trailer Crash on Accra–Kumasi Highway
Four people have died in a fatal crash involving a Toyota Voxy and a MAN Diesel trailer on the Accra–Kumasi Highway

A tragic road crash at Anyinasin Junction on the Accra–Kumasi Highway has claimed the lives of four people and left another person injured, highlighting once again the dangers motorists face on one of Ghana’s major transport corridors.

The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 28, 2026, involved a Toyota Voxy and a MAN Diesel trailer. The severity of the collision left the Toyota Voxy extensively damaged and required emergency responders to work to free victims trapped in the wreckage.

According to information from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported by multiple Ghanaian media outlets, the Bunso Fire Station received a distress call at 5:21 a.m. and arrived at the crash scene at approximately 5:35 a.m. with a seven-member rescue team.

One male victim was rescued and transported to Kibi Government Hospital for medical attention. Four other victims—three males and one female—were reported dead at the scene.

Crash Leaves Vehicles Severely Damaged

The collision resulted in significant damage to both vehicles involved.

The Toyota Voxy, registered GR 9430-26, was reportedly completely damaged in the crash, while the MAN Diesel trailer, registered GS 4064-26, sustained damage to its front compartment.

Images from the scene show the extent of the destruction, with emergency personnel working around the wreckage to rescue those trapped inside.

The condition of the Voxy demonstrates the force of the impact and the difficult circumstances emergency responders faced during the rescue operation.

Firefighters did more than simply extricate victims. The GNFS team also secured the accident scene and assisted with traffic management to help maintain the movement of vehicles along the busy highway.

One Victim Rescued and Taken to Hospital

Amid the tragedy, emergency responders were able to rescue one male victim from the wreckage.

He was transported to the Kibi Government Hospital, where he received medical attention following the crash.

The rescue operation underscores the importance of rapid emergency response following serious road accidents. In circumstances where people may be trapped inside severely damaged vehicles, the first few minutes can be critical.

The arrival of the Bunso Fire Station approximately 14 minutes after receiving the distress call allowed firefighters to begin the difficult process of freeing victims and securing the area.

The four people who died were identified in the initial reports only by gender—three males and one female. Authorities had not publicly provided further identifying details in the reports available at the time of publication.

Cause of Accident Yet to Be Established

While the circumstances surrounding the collision remain a subject of investigation, authorities have not yet officially established what caused the crash.

The accident scene was subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service, which is expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision.

This distinction is important because early accounts of road crashes can sometimes contain unverified information. Some preliminary reports circulating online have suggested possible overtaking-related circumstances, but those claims should not be treated as established facts until investigators officially determine what happened.

At this stage, the confirmed information is that the Toyota Voxy and MAN Diesel trailer were involved in the fatal collision and that the cause remains under investigation.

A Reminder About Highway Safety

The latest crash has renewed attention on road safety, particularly on major highways where passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and heavy-duty trucks operate alongside each other.

The Accra–Kumasi Highway is an important route connecting communities and economic centres between southern and central Ghana. Thousands of motorists and passengers use sections of the route for commercial, private and intercity transportation.

However, the mixture of different vehicle types creates situations in which mistakes can have devastating consequences.

Passenger vehicles can be significantly smaller than heavy-duty trailers. When a collision occurs between the two, the consequences can be particularly severe for occupants of the smaller vehicle.

For motorists, basic road-safety practices remain essential. Drivers need to remain alert, observe road signs and markings, maintain safe speeds, avoid dangerous manoeuvres and ensure that they have adequate visibility before making decisions on the road.

Overtaking requires particular caution. Drivers should make sure the road ahead is sufficiently clear, consider the speed and position of approaching vehicles and avoid attempting manoeuvres that could place other road users at risk.

Emergency Responders Play Critical Role

The response of the Ghana National Fire Service also highlights the critical role played by emergency agencies whenever serious crashes occur.

Road crashes can leave victims trapped inside vehicles, requiring specialised equipment and trained personnel to safely remove them.

At Anyinasin Junction, firefighters worked to extricate trapped victims, secure the accident scene and support traffic management.

Their work also demonstrates why motorists should exercise caution when approaching crash scenes. Emergency responders need enough space to operate, while unnecessary congestion can delay rescue operations.

Drivers approaching an accident scene should therefore slow down, follow instructions from emergency personnel and avoid stopping unnecessarily in ways that obstruct rescue vehicles.

The Human Cost Behind the Statistics

Road accidents are often reported through numbers: four dead, one injured, two vehicles damaged.

But behind those numbers are families, friends, colleagues and communities.

The four people who lost their lives in the Anyinasin Junction crash were travelling when their journey ended unexpectedly.

For their relatives, the consequences extend far beyond the crash scene. Families may have to deal with funeral arrangements, emotional trauma and the sudden loss of people who played important roles in their lives.

The survivor receiving treatment also faces the possibility of a difficult recovery following the incident.

This human cost is why road safety cannot be reduced to statistics. Every journey involves people whose lives can be permanently affected by a single moment on the road.

Need for Continued Road-Safety Awareness

The latest incident also reinforces the need for continuous road-safety education among motorists, commercial drivers, passengers and other road users.

Public education campaigns can help reinforce responsible driving habits, while enforcement of traffic regulations remains an important part of preventing dangerous behaviour.

Passengers also have a role to play. Where possible, they can encourage drivers to avoid excessive speed, dangerous overtaking and other risky practices.

Commercial drivers, who spend long hours on the road, face additional challenges including fatigue and pressure associated with long-distance travel. Maintaining appropriate rest periods and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained are therefore important aspects of highway safety.

Heavy-duty vehicle operators likewise have a responsibility to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and that they operate them with appropriate caution around passenger vehicles.

Police Investigation Expected to Establish Full Circumstances

With the accident scene handed over to the Police, investigations are expected to provide further information about how the collision occurred.

Investigators may examine the position of the vehicles, road conditions, witness accounts and other available evidence to establish the sequence of events.

Until the investigation is completed, claims about specific causes should be treated cautiously.

What remains confirmed is that the crash occurred at Anyinasin Junction on the Accra–Kumasi Highway, involved a Toyota Voxy and a MAN Diesel trailer, and resulted in four deaths and one reported survivor who was transported to hospital.

A Tragic Reminder for Every Road User

The Anyinasin Junction crash is another painful reminder that road safety requires responsibility from everyone who uses Ghana’s highways.

For drivers, every decision—from speed to overtaking and lane discipline—can have consequences. For passengers, choosing safe transportation and speaking up against reckless driving can also make a difference.

For authorities and emergency agencies, rapid response, enforcement and continued public education remain important components of road safety.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash, the immediate concern remains the wellbeing of the survivor and the families affected by the deaths.

The tragedy at Anyinasin Junction should serve not only as a news story but also as a reminder that every journey deserves caution, patience and respect for human life.

JONES NEWS extends its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, while wishing the injured survivor a safe and complete recovery.
